Abstract

Among his and Marx's friends, Engels was often called "the general". The nickname referred to his comprehensive knowledge of military matters, contemporary as well as historical. Reports on, comments on and analyses of military matters and armed conflicts form a very large part of Engels' writings. In this paper, I first try to outline Engels’ general approach to military power and warfare, drawing mainly on a key chapter in “Anti-Dühring”. Then I present and discuss some of Engels’ longer texts on military matters:
