Abstract
Society is constantly changing, and museums need to keep up to stay relevant. The museum collection, however, has been a part of the museum since the early days, and the basic assumption is that the collection still is the foundation of the museum today. The purpose of this paper is to explore the academic debate in six museological journals about this central part of almost all museums, the collection. The aim is to identify the main themes and areas of focus in the literature relating to the museum collection. A literature review has been conducted and from the analysis it is concluded that the collection is seen as a significant component of the organisation and as an actor that seeks to relate to other actors in various networks. However, it is also observed that work can be done in areas that can further position and activate the collection in a contemporary museum. Resources (such as manhours), professionalisation and digitisation are three key concepts.
