Music therapy and periods of lucidity in persons with advanced dementia

Abstract

Episodes of lucidity are by the medical doctor Ketil Normann described as "situations when people who normally lack conversational skills suddenly surprise their conversation partner and speak and/or act lucidly in a way that is not normal for them" (Normann 2001, s. 6). In this paper a view on dementia is presented where the person is not described as "demented" and in a permanent state of non-lucidity and confusion, but is described as a person where periods of confusion might alternate with clear and lucid mental states. These states are important as it is here that it is possible to meet the person's psychosocial needs. Ketil Normann's conceps of periods of lucidity are presented and connected to clinical music therapy practice and how it is possible to use music in order to elicit periods of lucidity. The theoretical part will be illustrated with video examples from clinical practice.
