Abstract
This essay discusses some of the ways in which the formation and continuous reproduction of the Western system of art has influenced contemporary discourses and practices of musical improvisation. Several moments in the history of Western musical improvisation are revisited, illustrating the consequences of romanticist and modernist conceptions of art, which continue to inform contemporary discourse and practice of improvisation in and beyond music.
