Abstract

The improvisational music therapy (music therapy centered on the use of musical improvisation) is an important practice within the music therapy practice in Brazil. According to the gold standard design in quantitative research, the randomized controlled trial (RCT), there is different evidence demonstrating the potential of improvisational music therapy in Brazil. The aim of this paper is to present a literature review in order to describe the main concepts of improvisational music therapy as well as the results of randomized controlled trials in this practice in the Brazilian context. The findings of this review indicate positive results of the improvisational music therapy on deafness, multiple disabilities and autism fields. Among the studies analyzed, half used specific music therapeutic assessments tools. The main results showed positive effects of music therapy in verbal and nonverbal
communication, sensory skills and emotional aspects. It is expected that future researches need to maintain the use of specific assessment in music therapy, larger samples (if possible with multicenter collaborations) and investigations with greater methodological rigor.
