New Realities and the Implications for Problem Based Learning: The case of business administration

Abstract

The background for this article is the big changes we have experienced since the idea of the problem based learning model was conceived at Aalborg University in the beginning of the 1970s. Assuming that no teaching model is context free, the challenge is to confront the basics of the problem-based learning model with the new realities of today. Three new realities are discussed, the new global realities, the new business realities, and the new realities at the individual level. The new realities challenge the problem-based learning model. Adjustments are needed in terms of closer co-operation with reality and thus integration between formal and experiential knowledge; more focus on creation and action (not just reflection); more possibilities for individual performance and the orchestrating of individual study programmes, and more focus on seeing the problem-based learning model in terms of long-life learning and, finally, the integrative use of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and the Internet. If these modifications are made, the problem-based learning model will be able to cope with the new realities to a larger extent than more conventional university models.
