Abstract

Gold adsorbates of the dodecamanganese(III,IV) single-molecule magnet (SMM) [Mn12O12(L)16(H2O)4] where L = 16-(acetylthio)hexadecanoate have been prepared and investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The successful imaging of Mn12 molecules by STM represents a first step toward the magnetic addressing of individual SMMs and the development of molecule-based devices for magnetic information storage.
