Abstract

In this chapter, the explanation of new design trending of pylons for future overhead lines is presented. The restriction in the use of conventional steel lattice pylons (in terms of visual appearance) for the planning of new overhead lines is mentioned. Some pylon design ideas to improve visual appearance of overhead transmission lines are reviewed. A state-of-the-art review for composite-based transmission pylons is presented. The proposed fully composite pylon concept in the research project of “Power Pylons of the Future (PoPyFu)” is introduced. The fully composite pylon’s design and experimental test challenges are described and the research objectives of the project to design and verify the electrical performance of the fully composite pylon are highlighted.
