Abstract
This article examines the implications of two different theoretical perspectives on communication between health professional and patient. One perspective is based on the so-called ʼcoaching traditionʼ, which in various forms has become popular in the health sector today. The second perspective in this article is presented through Hans-Georg Gadamerʼs philosophical hermeneutics. This perspective is different from the perspective of the coaching tradition. However, the intention is not to outplay the two perspectives against each other but rather to bring them together in a reflection on how we communicate. The purpose of the article is to contribute to such a reflection in order to increase awareness of what goes on in the communication between healthcare professional and patient when different approaches are accentuated. The two perspectives are exemplified through a few interview statements from patients participating in coaching. The purpose of these statements is primarily to support the theoretical discussion.
