Abstract

Human surroundings are experienced through the senses and the senses aid humans in understanding and responding to their environments purposefully. If sensory
functions are reduced, a person’s world becomes more difficult to understand and act in. People with dementia often have dysfunctional cognitive systems and difficulty
processing sensory information, which may lead to ill-being. This paper introduces the notion of scent modules for outdoor use at care homes for people with dementia.
Scent modules should offer pleasant sensory and cognitive stimulation in natural surroundings. Perspectives on how scent modules can be integrated into healthpromoting care and create well-being for people with dementia are presented.
