    Abstract

In Denmark urban renewal was previously considered to be renovation of buildings only, but now several municipalities include renewal of urban districts in the concept with the ensuing new requirements to planning. The report describes the results of the efforts of seven municipalities in selected urban districts. Together the seven districts cover four typical urban development districts needing urban development. The planning has been much characterized by concrete projects and resulting new requirements to the interaction between projects and the overall urban district planning. The planning itself lacked implementation and it was difficult to make municipal sectors engage enthusiastically in the urban development of the district. The municipalities have used traditional means with the emphasis on external support. The municipalities have been very reticent about actively buying sites as a means to further the desired development.
