Abstract

This paper summarizes the research work carried out by Roni Irnawan in his Ph.D. Thesis titled “Planning and Control of Expandable Multi-Terminal VSC-HVDC Transmission Systems”, at the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University. The thesis discusses the expansion plan of an existing point-to-point (PtP) link. The main topics discussed in the thesis are: 1) the changes in the steady-state DC voltage operating range of a PtP link when this link is expanded; 2) the impact of the new dc voltage range on the operation of the system; 3) the DC grid control concept that allows expansion of the system; 4) the interoperability between various vendors; 5) a generalized converter control; 6) external adjustment of the converter control response; 7) integration of auxiliary control functions.
