The limits of populism: Accomodative headscarf policies in Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands

Abstract

The presence of Islam and Muslim practices are a matter of fierce contestation in many immigration receiving states in Western Europe. As a consequence of this politicization many European policy makers have decided to restrict the wearing of the female Muslim headscarf. Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands contradict this trend. Despite the fact, that all the three countries have strong right-wing political parties, they have regulated the headscarf in the mid-2000s in a accommodative manner. This article gives an overview about the policy regulations in place and analyzes this puzzling phenomenon.
