Abstract

Objective: To investigate the association between four subtypes of social capital, and the self-reported quality of health care services among Danish hospital employees.

Background: Social capital refers to the resources in the relationships between employees within the same work unit (bonding social capital), between work units (bridging social capital) and between employees and their middle and top managers(s) respectively (linking social capital). Previous studies have found a positive association between social capital and job satisfaction among hospital employees. However, only few studies have investigated the relationship between social capital and the quality of health care services and none of these studies have used different subtypes of social capital.

Methods: Questionnaire data were collected from 1589 employees at The Regional Hospital West Jutland. We used validated scales for social capital and self-developed scales for quality of health care services divided into three types: clinical quality, quality of patient involvement, and overall professional quality. Data was analyzed using binary logistic regression.

Results: The analyses showed significant positive associations between bonding and bridging social capital and all three types of quality.

Conclusion and perspectives: The results provide support for a positive association between bridging and bonding social capital and the quality of health care services, which points to the importance of well-functioning relationships within and between hospital units. Hence, we suggest to include bonding and bridging social capital in hospital strategies to potentially improve the quality of health care services.
