Abstract

This chapter is a general introduction to the reactive power role in the voltage control and the stability in power transmission systems. It starts with a brief overview of the potential limitations related to the transmission system loading and also different ways that the reactive power can affect the power system operation. Different reactive power generation technologies based on capacitors and power electronic converters are reviewed as possible sources for the reactive power compensation. Also, voltage and reactive power control methods of the mentioned technologies are briefly explained for use in AC power transmission systems.
