Abstract

Timber is a complex building material with properties which are highly variable both spatially and in time. In structural engineering, the important material properties are the strength and stiffness related properties of standard test specimen under given (standard) loading and climate conditions and the timber density. JCSS (Joint Committee of Structural Safety) has recently developed a probabilistic model code for timber properties for structural design, (JCSS 2006). This paper describes the main content of this probabilistic model code and gives a short example for possible application.
