    Abstract

[From the editors' introduction:] The chapter provides a theoretical supplement to Azar Gat’s essay, delivering an explanation of why British and Danish decision-makers took certain courses of action and what guided the process in the latre 1930s. Uniquely among the chapters, the chapter approaches its subject from the perspective of a political scientist which enables a diffferent perspective on the sorts of factors that shaped the decisions of Western politicians and military leaders alike.
