RTDS Demonstration of Harmonic Amplification in under Sea/Ground Cables of Offshore Wind Farms

Abstract

This paper demonstrates harmonic magnification and power quality issues that can occur in offshore wind farms when long submarine and/or underground cables are employed in the transmission network. The wind farm is modeled in details in Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). The impedance of transmission network is scanned using frequency sweep to identify existing resonance circuits. The power quality of voltage waveform provided by wind farm is investigated at different locations, e.g. Point of Common Coupling (PCC), grid and local load. It is concluded that comprehensive harmonic mitigation and resonance damping studies should be fulfilled prior replacing the synchronous machines by inverter-based renewable energy sources connected to the conventionally designed transmission networks.
