Abstract

By comparing Denmark’s Venligboerne and Germany’s Seebrücke movements, this contribution looks at the ways in which refugee solidarity movements direct their efforts at other scales to cope with a shrinking space of solidarity caused by criminalization and/or depoliticization. By considering national differences in political opportunity structures and institutional frameworks, we offer a critical assessment of both the potentialities and limitations of scale-switching tactics.
