Abstract
Strategic Environmental Assessment is a tool developed with the aim of endorsing protection of the environment and promoting sustainable development. Strategic Environmental Assessment is contributing to environmental protection and sustainable development by providing an arena to incorporate environmental considerations into strategic decision-making processes.
Greenland is presently facing the potential of rapid and significant industrial development. The development can cause unforeseen induced environmental and societal effects. Therefore important strategic decisions are to be made in this regard. Based on the challenges for Greenland, this thesis investigates the effectiveness of a Strategic Environmental Assessment carried out for a potential aluminium production in Greenland. The thesis uses theories of effectiveness and power to answer the research question: How does SEA become effective in a Greenlandic context?
