Abstract

A cascaded brushless doubly fed induction machine (CBDFIM) drive with the same active rotor volume and comparable extended constant torque and constant power regions as those of the doubly fed induction machine (DFIM) is proposed and theoretically demonstrated. To achieve the appealing goal, the drive system is configured to supply the power winding with a constant voltage constant frequency (CVCF) inverter, while the control winding is fed with a closed-loop rotor flux oriented controlled variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) inverter. The proposed single-electrical-port (SEP) control method focuses on the electrical port of the control side rather than controlling the two electrical ports synchronously, and hence, significantly reduces the complexity while the doubled constant torque and constant power regions are still obtained. Simulations and experimental results are provided to verify the proposed drive configuration and control algorithm.
