Abstract
In this chapter, we explore how staging of temporary spaces can contribute to a transition from a linear production paradigm to a circular economy paradigm. Through an in-depth case study, we explore the effects of three different temporary spaces that successfully began to unlock inertia in the case company. We find that the key to successful staging of the circular economy journey is to apply a particular form of flexible and emergent staging where the stagers leverage the opportunities that arise in the uncertain and ever-changing field of opportunities and limitations in relation to the adoption of the new circular economy paradigm. The goal is to take advantage of emergent openings to create temporary spaces where it is possible for actors to experiment outside of the dominant routines and daily tasks to support new sensemaking and the generation of new ideas.
