Abstract

Significant reductions in energy use is yet to be realized across Europe despite decades of efforts to obtain energy savings. New problem framings are needed to understand and engage with the challenges of high levels of energy use. The European Network for Research, Good Practice and Innovation for Sustainable Energy (ENERGISE) has developed and tested new ways of framing such problems, resulting in an innovative Living Lab approach targeting and challenging resource-intensive practices and related energy consumption levels. The approach can be described as a set of staged interventions that configure different temporal spaces with different actor groups, and which explicitly allows for old and new practices to intersect through deliberation. This chapter reports on the framing of each space, highlighting empirical results of the practice theoretical staging approach. Concludingly, this chapter depicts what the concept of staging can contribute to a practice theoretical approach to challenging resource-intensive practices.
