Abstract

The article accounts for the situations in which distance supervision may be necessary. Skype™ is introduced as a way to make audiovisual distance supervision easy accessible. The literature on empirical studies of clinical supervision mediated by video is reviewed. Furthermore, the authors’ own clinical experience of Skype™ in supervision, mainly of psychoanalytic child psychotherapy, is presented and reflected upon. Finally, the reluctance of the Danish Board for Psychologists’s to recognize audiovisual distance supervision as part of the required training demands is discussed. It is concluded that although face-to-face meetings are to be preferred, today’s technology means that supervision via videoconference like Skype™ is better than just being acceptable. Thus, it offers a good alternative to face-to-face encounters, and in certain ways it even seems to boost the growth of the supervisees
