Abstract
A new approach for synchronous generator loss of filed (LOF) protection is presented in this paper by estimating and monitoring generator rotor angle (δ). It is illustrated that the derivative of δ i.e. Δδ can be easily used to detect LOF and to discriminate between LOF, SPS, and OOS. Most available power system software such as DIgSILENT and PSCAD have some limitations to study all kind of LOF events. To overcome this problem, RSCAD software in incorporated with the real-time digital simulator (RTDS) is employed to model the generator and its excitation system. Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed approach not only decreases the LOF relay operation time in most cases but also improves the LOF relay security in the face of various system disturbances.
