Abstract

At a university, teaching and research occupy dominating roles. The two activities link to each other, but are at the same time framed by different conditions and forming a tension field. By seeing their relationship in a historical perspective and using examples from empirical research this chapter aims to illuminate the conditions under which university employees find and experience the balance between teaching and research.
