Abstract

We examine the potential of an open innovation digital platform to expose a local innovation process to a greater number of ideas and a more inclusive set of stakeholders. To do so we studied an online innovation challenge on the OpenIDEO to reimagine the end-of-life experience sponsored by Sutter Health of California, a non-profit health system in California, and Helix, a design studio in healthcare based at Imperial College. Through this effort, we have sought to better understand the potential value of exposing a local innovation process to an open innovation platform and to what extent it leads to a greater number of ideas from a wider and more inclusive set of stakeholders. We offer insights for the literatures on open innovation and design thinking in a healthcare context.
