Abstract

The use of digital Open Innovation platforms for customer co-creation generates valuable opportunities for including customers in product development. However, introducing product customization has large implications on the internal manufacturing system and can thus be a catalyst for a digital transformation of the manufacturing system. Through an in-depth case study, this research investigates the consequences of Open Innovation to the manufacturing system. The findings show how the flexibility of the manufacturing system must be increased to accommodate product customization, and how extensive the digital transformation is.
