Abstract
In this chapter, we set out to ask what comparison has to offer for non-representational methodologies by reading tourism encounters with climate changes in Greenland and the Alps through each other. How can we compare while being "in the midst of things" with no distance or privileged grand panorama? How do differences and similarities become affective, frictuous, and speculative across fields? We compare while staying in the middle, continuously wandering from the center to the periphery of different fields, feelings, and affects. Tinkering with comparison, we weave snow lives-the personal and field experiences with snow in the Austrian Alps and Greenland-to explore and experiment with comparison through affect, friction, and speculation. By tinkering with comparing, we contemplate the possibilities for situated knowing and worlding where partial connection across fields can be both shared and distinct. Playing with comparison from a non-representational perspective offers a possibility for collaborative thinking with and performing a shared response-ability with small and often overlooked communities amid a global climate crisis without losing sight of situated knowledge and agency.
