To and from a university career: Competencies and career strategies among PhD graduates in Denmark

Abstract

For some years European countries have had political objectives for promoting higher education and research. Therefore, there has been an increased supply of PhD graduates in all disciplines. From a socio-economic point of view, investment in the highly educated is considered necessary to ensure competitiveness in the global knowledge economy. However, this requires that after graduation the PhDs gain employment and that the skills they develop through the PhD also match the tasks they face in the labour market. This has led to an interest in investigating the competences and career paths of the PhDs in recent years. This applies especially to the PhDs within the humanities and social sciences, which have been investigated in a Danish research project. Drawing on data from this project and on the theory of Bourdieu, the paper analyses the main career strategies of this group of PhDs, which include research, mixed, and exit strategies.
