Abstract

The two-wave mixing formalism for photorefractive beam coupling is extended to include the effects of an external magnetic field via the introduction of the Faraday effect. Moreover, the magnetic-field effects on the perturbed permittivity are also included in the analysis given here. It is concluded that the presence of a static magnetic field causes oscillations in the coupling between the two incident fields, and that such an effect is severe in materials of diluted magnetic semiconductors as was measured experimentally only recently. Numerical results are given for BSO and for CdMnTe, where the first material in addition to the Faraday effect exhibits optical activity, whereas the second material does not.
