Abstract
The calculation of the bearing capacity of a strip foundation located on the edge of or near a slope is commonly based on the well-known bearing capacity equation applying so called slope factors, and expressions for these factors have been proposed by amongst others Brinch Hansen and Vesic. These factors only take into account the inclination of the slope, whereas other parameters, which may play a role, such as the distance from the footing to the slope, the width of the footing and the strength of the soil are ignored. The present work comprises finite element based upper- and lower-bound calculations, using the software OptumGEO, considering the influence of these factors for vertical loads, and also the effect of a possible surcharge is investigated. The results are given as design charts and tables suitable for practical design.
