    Abstract

This paper considers the problem of damage assessment of civil engineering structures using statistical information. The aim of the paper is to review how researchers recently have tried to solve the problem. It is pointed out that the problem consists of not only how to use the statistical information for the damage assessment but also how the information can be used for updating the reliability of the structure. It is concluded in the paper that the use of statistical information perhaps is the key to damage assessment.
