Abstract

Users as a topic for STS emerged in the 1980s as a part of a wider effort in STS to develop alternatives to technological determinism. Studies of users showed that technologies are contested and artfully integrated by users to yield effects in homes and workplace. Instead of docile adopters, users were found to be active agents in shaping sociotechnical change. The understanding of users expanded further during the 2000s when user participation mainstreamed in design and innovation activities carried out by both peer communities and private companies alike; and with intensified efforts to produce productive users.
