Abstract

Difficult life history - a resource when working with difficult issues.

The article relates to a context concerning drop-out rates from vocational educations seen in relation to the social and healthcare assistant education. Through interviews with social and healthcare students and observations of their internships in nursing homes, it is argued that difficulties in their own lives not necessarily are seen as a barrier to working with people who themselves have difficulties. It thus challenges the thinking of causality between personal problems and failing to complete the education. The empirical evidence includes findings which support the argument that social and healthcare students working with citizens in nursing homes are not retained in spite of their difficulties but complete the education because of their experience with difficulties. Apart from the empirical point the article also has the intention of addressing the procedural course of the article as some considerations related to the work of French historical epistemology.
