Abstract
The chapter discusses some philosophical, psychological and sociological foundations of adult education in contemporary western societies. Processes of learning are becoming more and more important at all levels of society. Living in the modern world has led to the development of biographical reflexion in adult life, including individual strategies for education and work. Both institutionalised adult education and non-formal learning - for instance in the workplace - are necessary elements in contemporary society, and it is an important task for adult education theory and practise to maintain a comprehensive perspective in order to create connectivity and synergy. Normative philosophical reflexion cannot stand alone; adult education must have a strong basis in empirical research.
