Abstract

The behaviour of sand during cyclic loading can be characterized as "stabilization", "instant stabilization". "pore pressure buildup" and "liquefaction". The terminologies can be defined exactly by a simple mathematical formulation based on the existence of a cyclic stable state. By introducing a mobilization index M it is possible to describe the strongly hysteretic behaviour during loading and unloading, even if the stress path is complicated.
