    The presentation looks at the debate about Muslim women's headscarves from a democratic citizenship perspective with a focus on the tension between gender equality and recognition of diversity. The debate has become centra in the struggle about the meaning of mnultculturalism and feminism in Europe. The results from the European VEIL-project indicates that the headscarf has many meanings and is contextual. Use of the headscarf is interpreted by some as an expression of patriarchal religion and by others as an expression of women's autonomous actions.
