The history of Latin squares

Project Details

Description

An attempt is made to trace the history of latin squares by uncovering and studying as many original sources as possible, from the first known occurence in relation to a puzzle with playing cards in 1624, over important work of Euler and the first publications relating latin squares to statistics, both in the latter part of the eighteenth century, to the resolution of the Euler conjecture around 1960.
