Abstract

While the interest in local area network (LAN) parties is steadily rising, experimental studies of the physical and biochemical effects of participating in LAN parties in children and adolescents is relatively new. Hence, our study aimed to examine the changes in the metabolome of young, healthy men during and after a LAN party. We mimicked a “normal situation” around a LAN party and analyzed serum metabolomics of the nine young male adults. At the start of the study, the metabolomics profiles of the gamers were very different, but after long periods of gaming, they all responded in the same way and developed similar profiles. Three ketone bodies, lysine, tyrosine/phenylalanine and 15 other metabolites were most acutely affected during and after long gaming sessions. Lysine and tyrosine were among a number of metabolites that did not return to baseline five days after the long gaming session. The LAN party had a strong effect on the metabolic phenotype of gamers. A number of metabolites associated with cardiovascular disease, obesity, cognitive performance, and life expectancy were observed to change during and after long gaming sessions, moreover, the observed dynamic changes at the molecular level did not quickly recover even in healthy gamers.
