Abstract
Candidatus Accumulibacter is the most studied polyphosphate-accumulating organism (PAO), with a primary role in biological nutrient removal. However, the species-level taxonomy of this lineage is very complex. Here, we used genome-resolved, 16S rRNA and ppk1 gene- based phylogenies to redefine the taxonomy of these organisms and establish a common understanding of this genus. Genome mining of genes and pathways related to the PAO metabolism provided additional
insights into the metabolic potential of these organisms, further validated in situ by application of a new set of FISH probes and Raman microspectroscopy, which provided a clearer understanding of their function in the WWTP ecosystem.
