Abstract

The Balearic Islands have one of the best
telecommunications infrastructures in Spain, with more than 1500
Radio Base Stations (RBS) covering a total surface of 4.991,66 km².
This archipelago has high energy consumption, with high CO2
emissions, due to an electrical energy production system mainly
based on coal and fossil fuels which is not an environmentally
sustainable scenario. The aim of this study is to identify the processes
that would reduce the energy consumption and greenhouse gas
emissions, designing a target scenario featuring "zero CO2
emissions" and "100% renewable energies" in RBS. The energy
costs, CO2 emissions and data traffic data used for the study are
generated by a sample of RBS from the Balearic Islands. The results
are shown in terms of energy performance for a normal and net zero
emissions scenarios.
