Communication and Psychology, Aalborg University
Identity is one of the core concepts in psychology, sociology, linguistics, anthropology, organizational, political science as well as neuroscience. It comes as no surprise therefore, that research on identity is rooted in a variety of theoretical and epistemological traditions. Within recent years, the conception of identity, has undergone a major shift across these disciplines and is increasingly conceived of as dynamic and fluid process rather than as essentials or stable entity across contexts. Moreover, there exist clear commonalities in contemporary identity research and theory concerning the issue of what identity is, where it is, and how it is constituted. First, continuity abd change as sameness and difference remains of central concern in identity studies, Second, there is a tendency to move away from (only) investigating inferiorities as the central place for identity construction and a turn to relational approaches studding discursive practices in social interaction. Third, while there has been a wide agreement that language is constitutive of identity, we recently see a shift away from or rather an invitation to go beyond language. in this presentation, Carolin will give a brief overview of the current state-of-the-art of contemporary identity research and theory and will particularly showcase Bamberg's narrative practice approach as one of the most prevailing approaches in current identity research.
