Purpose: To study the possibilities of increasing the capacity of different soils to hold infiltrating rainfall in hydrological areas dependent on the dominant form of utilization (forestry or agriculture). the studies were made in the lands Brandenburg and Niedersachsen. Synopsis: The goal of the network is to provide the scientific fundamentals of advanced risk management of natural disasters and to make these available for users. This requires quantitative description of extreme natural events and their impact on man and environment. Realistic scenarios will be developed to estimate the current risk and future changes in risk due to global change (climate variability, increasing density of humans and values in endangered areas, etc.). The information gained needs to be refined and made available through fast and interactive communication systems. By these means the information can be used for early warning, for decision support in disaster management and to inform the public and politicians. Furthermore, the results of the project will be used to recommend safety strategies and risk reduction measures.
