Orchestration Mechanisms For Sustainable Business Model Innovation: Insights From Facilitated Processes With Danish Firms

Activity: Talks and presentationsConference presentations

Description

While much research stresses the importance of stakeholder involvement and interorganizational collaboration in sustainable business model innovation, less is known about the dynamics and actor roles of these collaborative processes. This article investigates the roles of one particular actor in the process: the orchestrator – an external organization that is accompanying and supporting the innovation process. The article presents a multiple case study of 11 sustainable business model innovation processes involving a total of 40 firms to shed light on this role. The cases are presented by identifying factors that characterize the process, which either inhibit or support the innovation. The study then investigates the mechanisms the orchestrator uses to deal with these factors. By doing so, network orchestration theory is explored in the context of sustainable business model innovation. The article thus creates insights on how innovation processes leading towards sustainable business models can be supported from outside. This does not only entail implications for practitioners wishing to facilitate these processes, but also for researchers working with network orchestration and sustainable business model innovation.
