Abstract

Automatic orientation of aerial images based on existing databases was a topic of the OEEPE research project running in 1998 and 1999. Different approaches for solving this task have been published until now. The method developed at Aalborg University uses the existing topographic database and orthoimages to extract image patches containing objects that fulfil conditions for successful image matching. The derived patches are later matched with a new aerial image in order to find image co-ordinates of the chosen objects. The parameters of exterior orientation of the new image are then determined by means of spatial resection. This paper describes in details the mentioned procedure as it was used and implemented during tests with two data sets from Denmark. Moreover, the results from a test made with a data set from the Czech Republic are added. It brought a different view to this complex of problems with respect to a different landscape and quality of input data. Finally, some ideas for improving and generalising the method are suggested.
