Abstract

Set within the under-explored context of Tivoli in Copenhagen, we adapt a mixed-method approach relying on multimodal data and impressionistic storytelling, to qualitatively explore the material staging of Christmas as well as the overall impact of sensescapes on the visitor’s food experience. Drawing on affect theories and non-representational theory the paper advances multisensory food research. In this process, we demonstrate how affective atmospheres influence and shape food experiences ‘in situ’ and develop the notion of smokescape as a poignant new concept for future food studies.
