How to ensure that cavities do not form in a wall insulated with loose-fill materials? This report contains a theoretical review and experimental results that could answer the question. The mechanisms that result in settling of insulation materials are described. Moreover significant mechanical properties are determined for a number of new insulation materials available on the Danish market. Apart from a theoretical perspective of settling of loose-fill insulation materials, the report also contains description of experiments to determine the mechanical properties of this type of insulation materials. A number of criteria are established for avoiding settling of insulation materials by practical uses. The report concludes with the presentation of a design tool to avoid settling of loose-fill insulation materials in walls.
