A project called Fremtidens Bæredygtige Production, in collaboration with Industriens Fond, has measured the sustainable transition in small and medium manufacturing companies. Half of the SME's state that there is a need for new technology to promote their company's green transition. However, only 7% of the companies surveyed state that over 10% of their budget is allocated to research and development. Brian Vejrum Wæhrens, professor at the Department of Materials and Production at Aalborg University, finds that, "[i]f the companies want to be competitive, then sustainability must be a guiding factor for the company's investments."
