Abstract:
In many mechanical systems it is desired to use lubrication to reduce wear and friction in the system. It is in these systems desired to be able to measure the quality of the lubrication, to ensure high efficiency and longevity. This project is concerned with the use of ultrasound measurements to estimate system parameters relating to the quality of the lubrication, such as lubrication film thickness. Ultrasound methods are desirable since ultrasonic waves are able to penetrate an array of different materials, and often the penetration depth is so large that the ultrasonic probes can be conveniently placed in the systems of interest, without damaging the design of the system. This project is mainly concerned with developing reliable in-situ calibration algorithms of the ultrasonic probes, since the current calibration methods either require for the system to be taken apart or is to unreliable to be used in industrial applications. It is believed that the algorithms developed in this project would greatly aid in the development of condition monitoring, prognostic control, and the design process of components using lubrication. This would potentially result in increased efficiency, decreased wear and decreased downtime of many different systems, from hydraulic power tools to large scale offshore wind turbines.
